Organizations should footnote all assumptions made as well as method for gathering data (e.g. survey to sample set of clients, survey to all clients, data gathered as part of client intake form, etc.). Organizations should disclose whether pre-tax or post-tax income is being used for the calculation and should ensure consistency.
This is an outcome metric intended to capture change in client income. Organizations should obtain this data by asking clients whether income has increased, decreased, or stayed the same in the reporting period. Organizations should report the number of clients in each category: increase, decrease, and no change in income.
Organizations may report both total number of clients per category (total number of clients with increased, decreased, no change in income) as well as ratio/proportion based on total number of clients (e.g., percentage in each category over total number of clients).
In specific contexts, and based on evidence, this metric may serve as a proxy indicator of whether the outcome being sought by an investor or organization is occurring (the WHAT dimension of impact). For more on the alignment of IRIS metrics to the five dimensions of impact, see specific guidance document. No single metric is sufficient to understand an impact; rather, metrics are selected as a set across all dimensions of impact. When possible, the selection of metrics to measure and describe the five dimensions should be based on best practice and evidence.
Metrics identified as "cross-category" are those that are relevant to any IRIS+ Impact Category or Impact Theme (i.e., these metrics are not specific to any particular industry/category or theme).
